What an incredible weekend we had! Honestly! What an amazing group of women, so much creativity and so much fun all together, that I.am.still.in.AWE.
I am honestly so proud of we have put together, as one of a kind combined workshop, never done before in London! We really gambled to put together 2 completely different art, Aimee, Isabella and me, but we really believed in this workshop and finally made our vision real. Still, we see improvements to make, opportunities we couldn't imagine before we saw our workshop live.
I really want to thank the students coming from all over the world, Panama, Singapore, Norway, Italy... Without you all, this workshop won't have been possible. Styling, Food Photography and Natural Dye
We spread the course over two days and we held it at Clapham Studios. The studio has great light, large kitchen for the natural dyeing crafting process and beautiful quirky space for dining too.
The first day
We started with a vegan cake, teas and brief introduction. Then the groups were split in half. In the morning one half was doing the natural process with Isabella. The other half was introduced to camera settings and basics of food styling and the use of natural light After the introduction, they had the opportunity to do motion shots of the dye process and a flat lay of the crafting.
We all sat for a copious vegan lunch featuring my umami chickpeas salad, artisan organic bread with beetroot hummus and spinach pesto ( I am Italian, always prioritizing for people to be well fed!). We served vegan cookies with green tea, coffee or black tea.
After lunch, the 2 groups swap and worked on the other task.
We ended the day bringing the groups together for the styling of tricky food. The brown chickpeas salad, learning step by step the practical building up of the setting.
The second day
The second day we focused on storytelling, highlighting how we build the visual story of a recipe from start to end, our techniques and how to keep the work efficiently with the time and subject given.
The use of all props, and the different backgrounds. We dived deep into the use of natural light, when and how to screen the light.
We had lunch with my organic lentil salad, some artisan wholemeal bread with purple potatoes hummus and turmeric hummus.
In the afternoon we styled the finished cake and took few different shots of the final setting.
Then we ended up the day with the editing session along with Q&A. Of course, this session happened drinking copious amounts of freshly brewed coffee and eating abundant slices of the cake
The cake was a matcha and vanilla sponge with purple potatoes, strawberry powder and lavender frosting.
At 4 we wrapped it up and the students received their goodie bags.
My heartfelt take on the experience.
Creativity is nourished by the exchange.
I loved to see the student experiencing free creativity, grow their skills literally under my eyes, have fun and be connected to each other. For sure I want my workshops to be a community event, to gather people together, connect them because creativity gets deeply nourished by the exchange of ideas. And this is the greatness of a group or 1-2-1 workshop, as we work together, we inspire each other. The teachers inspire the students, the students inspire the teachers. We are not the sage on the stage but guides that help you to the next step wherever you with your styling and photography.
During a workshop, we become a team
During the workshop, we are a team. Surely we have notions to teach and experience to share that students pay for, however, is the creativity flow to nourish us all. The love of beauty. The passion for sharing this beauty we carry in our hearts.
I tell you what, I am Italian, I got some serious southern blood in my vein, I am wired to communicate, share my passions with an open heart. Without any false modesty, teaching is really natural to me and is the most fun job I can think of. I am the first one to really enjoy my own workshops. And I bet you can tell! This workshop has been an eyes opening experience for me on how much I love teaching and how rewarding it is to me.
Fun is the new commitment
I want to have fun and contribute to my student fun because attitude is all when you try to succeed at something. I believe my first duty is to teach the right attitude to something as creative as styling. I want my student to have a light-hearted approach.
Where light-hearted still means serious and passionate. However means also that styling becomes your safe place, your daily retreat and not your daily battle. The circumstances make the 10% of our success, is our response that makes the other 90%.
And as I spent years learning and practising life coaching, I do believe deliver the right attitude is part of teaching anything creative.
